There is a possibility that the first ever battery was made by an ancient civilisation that lived in the area that is now known as Baghdad in Iraq. This was over 2000 years ago and is referred to as the Baghdad Battery.

Volta recreated Galvani's experiment and discovered that it was having two different metals that created the electrical effect. This inspired him to construct his battery by layering silver, paper or cloth soaked in salt, and zinc and then stacking these triple layers in a pile. The more triple layers there were in the pile the bigger the voltage of the battery. Even today the French word for battery is ‘pile'.
